COMPELLED
TO REACH OUT
There is a lot of talk about vision statements and strategies being
developed in churches today. Kelso-Longview seems to have had an
experience of the Vision discovering them. From the moment a Christmas
program was spoken, the church rushed to create and develop it.
Today, every second week in December you’ll find thousands
of community people coming into their church to be escorted out
by their guide on their way to Bethlehem. It has provided the Kelso-Longview
Community Seventh-day Adventist Church an opportunity to reach
into the community and become an influence for good at a time when
people are looking for something family oriented and fun. The program
is called “Journey to Bethlehem.” If you are ever around
our area on the second weekend of December, stop by, you won’t
be disappointed, just watch out for those rough Roman Guards.
Over the Easter weekend the church takes the community on another
journey, called “Journey to the Cross. Through the musical
written by David Clydesdale called “Let All Heaven Rejoice,” the
church has developed a dramatic expression from the temptations
in the wilderness through His death, burial and resurrection and
His glorification. The choir is a group of angels who look down
and interact with Jesus through out His lifetime here on earth.
Rollyn and Angie Betts play Jesus and the moderator of the event.
A cast of 100 make it exciting and real as the crowd is moved from
fear and despair to joy and elation.
The Kelso-Longview
Community Seventh-day Adventist Church is compelled
by Jesus to reach outside itself. Another way they do this is through
their Free Market Small Group Network. They begin with a rally
night that kicks off the new quarter of small groups. The church
runs three quarters a year taking summer off. The last kickoff
they held over 400 people attended “A Night In Mexico.” It
was a night to remember how we all came together had fun and signed
up for groups and helped our Hispanic children in church school.
If you ever attend our church on Sabbath, you will find a group
of people who will welcome you and feed you and be genuinely
happy that you have joined them. Our services are a blended
service that
consists of hymns and praise music. On any given Sabbath the
congregation will have as many as thirty people from the community
join them.
Sermons are Bible based and doctrinally solid. Dave Livermore
the senior pastor has been with the church for over twelve
years. Others
on the staff are Teresa Livermore, Church Secretary, Marcia Stone,
Assistant Pastor, Carlos Lopez, Spanish Bible Worker and Steve
Rogers, Bible Worker. Our Associate Pastor Doug Franzke has been
with us for the past five years, at the time of this article
he is in transition.
There is much more to tell about the church, but the best way
to experience it is to come some Sabbath and find Jesus among
the
service, people and the mission they are on.
